The management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), has condemned the assault on one of its medical doctors by a relative of a patient, declaring that violence against healthcare workers will not be tolerated under any circumstance.
In a statement issued by the hospital’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Fagbemi Abiodun, the management reaffirmed its commitment to protecting members of staff while maintaining quality healthcare services for patients.
The hospital described the incident as unfortunate and stressed that the safety and welfare of its workers remain a top priority alongside the well-being of patients.
“The Hospital maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of assault, whether verbal or physical against its healthcare personnel, particularly while they are discharging their professional responsibilities,” the statement said.
According to the management, mechanisms have already been put in place for patients and their relatives to channel complaints through peaceful and established procedures instead of resorting to violence.
It added that warning notices against the assault of healthcare workers have been displayed across the hospital in English and several Nigerian languages to promote awareness and encourage responsible conduct.
To forestall similar incidents, the hospital said security personnel have been placed on heightened alert across its facilities to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors.
The management also expressed support for the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), in pursuing all lawful actions over the incident, noting that the suspect had either been arraigned or was in the process of being arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
While condemning what it described as uncivil behaviour, UITH assured the public that it remains committed to delivering quality healthcare in a safe, respectful and welcoming environment for both patients and healthcare professionals.
