From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kwara State Command, has arrested 32-year-old Adetokunbo Adeshina, for allegedly using threatening phone calls to extort money from members of the public.

Adeshina was arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State, following an intelligence-led operation. The Command said several victims had complained of repeated calls demanding money under threats of violence.

In a statement on Friday, Command spokesperson ASC I Ayoola Michael Shola said one victim, whose identity was withheld for security reasons, was allegedly ordered to pay ₦500,000 or face attacks on himself, his family, and his business.

Investigators traced the suspect after gathering intelligence from complaints lodged by victims.

Preliminary findings indicate that Adeshina allegedly obtained his targets’ phone numbers through Facebook before making calls to intimidate them into paying money, the NSCDC said.

During a search after the arrest, operatives reportedly recovered eight registered SIM cards from different telecommunications networks. Investigators believe the SIMs were used in the alleged extortion.

“The latest incident involved a complainant whose identity is withheld for security reasons, from whom the suspect allegedly demanded ₦500,000, threatening to unleash violence on him, his family and his business,” the statement said.

The Command said the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue to uncover the full scope of the alleged operation.

NSCDC added that Adeshina will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
