Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has called on political actors and stakeholders across the state to uphold the sanctity of traditional institutions, emphasising that respect for royal fathers must remain non-negotiable regardless of status or position.

Governor Ododo made this appeal at the Conference Hall of Government House, Lokoja, while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Yagba West Local Government Area led by Oba J.J. Falope.

The Governor pointed out that the traditional rulers remain critical partners in governance and grassroots development, stressing that their roles as custodians of culture and peace make them indispensable in decision-making processes.

“No matter how highly placed anyone may be, our royal fathers must be accorded the respect they deserve. They are the bridge between government and the people, and we must continue to honour and protect that institution,” the Governor stated.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with traditional institutions to ensure inclusive governance, peace, and sustainable development across the state.

The Governor also underscored the importance of consultation with elders and community leaders, particularly on political matters, adding that their wisdom and guidance are vital for stability and progress.

“Stakeholders must be consulted. Elders must be carried along. Traditional rulers must be involved before decisions are taken, especially on issues that affect the people directly,” he said.

Governor Ododo further reiterated that while political stakeholders in Yagba West have taken steps on zoning arrangements, he would await formal recommendations from the elders before taking any position, in line with his belief in participatory governance.

“I will continue to respect the voice of the elders because that is the true voice of the people,” he added.

He revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently emphasized the need for leaders to engage and respect traditional rulers, noting that his administration would continue to align with that counsel.

Earlier, speaking on behalf of the delegation, Oba J.J. Falope expressed appreciation to the Governor for his commitment to inclusive governance and sustained engagement with traditional institutions.

He described the visit as a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Yagba West and the State Government, pledging the continued support and cooperation of the people.

The monarch reaffirmed the loyalty of Yagba West to the Governor, assuring him of their unwavering backing for his administration and future aspirations.

Oba Falope commended the Governor’s developmental strides in the area, citing improved infrastructure, increased political inclusion, and consistent government presence as key achievements that have positively impacted the lives of the people.

He also acknowledged ongoing security interventions, including the deployment of personnel and surveillance efforts, which have contributed to improved safety in the region.

On political matters, the traditional rulers reiterated their support for continuity in governance while advocating for the retention of the senatorial seat within Yagba West.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engrineer Joseph Olusegun, and the Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area, Hon. Tosin Olokun, commended the Governor for fostering unity and partnership with the people, pledging their continued support for the administration’s development agenda.
