*2.5 million mosquito nets deployed to 21 LGAs
From Joseph Adahnu, Yola
The Adamawa State Government, in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Management Sciences for Health (MSH), and the Society for Family Health (SFH), has scheduled June 25, 2026 for the flag-off of a statewide anti-malaria campaign.
The campaign will cover all 21 local government areas of the state. Development partners and civil society organisations have pledged their readiness and commitment to support the campaign and ensure its success.
Speaking at a press conference and media orientation in Yola ahead of the launch, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, represented by Permanent Secretary Pharmacist Zira Mathias, assured stakeholders of the state’s full support.
Pharmacist Mathias commended the CSOs for the intervention, noting that it will help tackle the high prevalence of malaria, especially during the rainy season.
Also speaking, the Programme Manager of the Malaria Elimination Programme, Mr. Benjamin Nashon, called for public support to ensure the campaign succeeds. He stressed that saving lives and building a healthy society is a collective responsibility, and urged all stakeholders to support government and development partners for a hitch-free exercise.
Mrs. Ifoma expressed concern over rising malaria cases among children during this period. She urged the media to intensify public enlightenment on the importance of the campaign and to ensure eligible children benefit from the exercise.
In a related development, the state government and CSOs have deployed 2.5 million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), to the 21 LGAs. The distribution began on Monday 22nd, 2026 and is expected to be completed over the weekend.
The intervention, supported by the Global Fund, targets over 2.5 million beneficiaries across the state. It is one of the largest health interventions in Adamawa in recent times.
A total of 2,554,847 ITNs and drugs for the 2026 integrated Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention and Insecticide-Treated Materials (SMC/ITM) campaign, will be delivered through a single-phase, door-to-door approach. The approach will focus on rural wards where malaria risk is highest.
Speaking during the deployment, Mr. Yunfa Tarfa, Warehouse Manager of the Adamawa State Health Commodities Agency, confirmed that over 2.5 million nets have been distributed across all 21 LGAs to ensure smooth implementation.
Mr. Sunday Joshua Yamte, Warehouse Manager with the State Ministry of Health and Human Services, said the intervention will save many families, especially in rural communities, and help reduce the mortality rate in the state.
Yamte also identified declining funding from international partners as a major challenge facing the sector. He called for consistent payment of counterpart funds to support procurement and distribution of mosquito nets.
