The Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has urged government to increase funding for state-owned media houses and improve the welfare of journalists to enhance productivity and sustain press freedom.
State Chairman of the NUJ, Alhaji Ademu Haruna, made the call in a statement to mark World Press Freedom Day.
The statement signed by the Council Secretary, Dr. Atuluku Samuel, Ademu said a free press cannot thrive without proper funding and improved welfare for journalists, noting that media organisations currently face several challenges that require urgent attention from government and other stakeholders.
He called on media owners, particularly government-owned outlets, to provide modern technological tools to meet growing industry demands.

The chairman specifically appealed to the Kogi State Government, to upgrade facilities in its media establishments, including Radio Kogi and Graphic Newspapers, increase funding for the State Ministry of Information, and establish a state-owned television station.
Ademu said press freedom involves giving journalists unhindered access to information and enabling them to work without fear of harassment, intimidation, or threats to their safety.
He commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, for maintaining a free relationship with journalists in the state and called for stronger synergy between government and the press.
“We must point out that the NUJ needs a more favourable environment to function. We urge the Kogi State Government to ensure it has a signature project within the NUJ. The old structures are already in a bad state. Government’s intervention is expedient, and such marks will remain indelible,” he added.
He said this year’s World Press Freedom Day focuses on the protection of human rights and the safety of lives and property.
Ademu assured that the council will continue to collaborate with relevant authorities, particularly security agencies, to ensure the safety and protection of journalists across the state.
World Press Freedom Day 2026, celebrated on May 3, focused on the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlighting the role of free media in fostering peace, security, and democracy. Events emphasised protecting journalists from rising attacks and countering disinformation, with a global conference held in Lusaka, Zambia, from May 4th –5th, 2026.
