A sombre mood has enveloped Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, following the death of several health workers in a fatal road accident while returning from the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
The victims, who were members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), reportedly lost their lives on Friday evening along the Oke-Onigbin–Omu-Aran road after the vehicle conveying them suffered a tyre burst and veered off the road.
The tragic incident occurred just hours after the workers joined thousands of labour union members at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin, to mark this year’s May Day, turning what began as a celebration of workers’ contributions into a day of mourning.
Reacting to the development, the Executive Chairman of Ekiti Local Government Council, Honourable Awelewa Gabriel, described the incident as a painful and devastating loss to the council and the entire health sector.
“Our hearts are heavy. These were dedicated professionals who left their homes to celebrate the dignity of labour, only to meet this unfortunate fate on their way back. We have lost patriots who served our communities with compassion and commitment,” he said.
He expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and prayed for divine comfort, noting that the sacrifice and service of the fallen workers would not be forgotten.
The council boss also extended prayers to those who sustained injuries in the crash, expressing hope for their speedy recovery as they receive treatment in various hospitals.
“The entire Ekiti Local Government Council stands with the MHWUN family at this difficult moment. We pray God Almighty to heal the injured, comfort the bereaved, and grant the departed eternal rest,” he added.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when one of the vehicles in the convoy conveying the union members experienced a sudden tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control.
Although the exact number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed, the incident has sparked grief among colleagues and residents across the state.
In response, the Kwara State chapter of MHWUN has declared a three-day mourning period, directing members to fly the union’s flag at half-mast in honour of the deceased.
Honourable Awelewa assured that the local government would work closely with relevant authorities to provide necessary support to the bereaved families and cover medical expenses for the injured.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to get an official response from the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kwara State were unsuccessful.
