Residents of Oke-Bonke in Ilorin South, were thrown into panic on Monday, after a sudden fire swept through a residential building at No. 20 Oluwole Area.

The incident, which occurred around 2:17pm, affected all four flats in the building before firefighters arrived at the scene.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, firemen battled intensely to halt the flames from spreading to nearby houses. “Our officers moved in swiftly and professionally, ensuring that the situation did not escalate beyond the affected structure,” the statement noted.
A preliminary inquiry traced the cause of the fire to a power surge that reportedly ignited electrical components within the building.
Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, cautioned residents to prioritise electrical safety to prevent avoidable domestic fires.
He urged households to install quality circuit breakers, use surge protectors and regularly inspect their wiring systems. “Power surges remain one of the leading triggers of home fires. We appeal to residents to stay alert, especially during periods of unstable electricity supply,” he warned.
He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kwara State, assuring the public of continued rapid response to emergencies.
