WAPP North Core Project, near completion, set to boost power supply

The Executive Board Chairman, West African Power Pool (WAPP), Engrineer Sule Abdulaziz said, the North Core Project, nears completion, is set to boost power supply, drive economic growth in West Africa.

The 330kv project is expected to reduce electricity costs, enhance grid reliability, and stabilise power supply to key sectors like healthcare and manufacturing.

Engrineer Ahmed Abdulaziz, who is also the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), revealed at the 9th meeting of the Joint Supervision Committee held in Abuja where he described the project as “a practical demonstration of regional cooperation,” that will promote economic activities across borders.

He said, the project has created jobs and developed capacity in participating countries, strengthening West Africa’s position in global infrastructure development. However, security concerns and logistical constraints are impacting timelines.

Abdulaziz commended development partners like the African Development Bank and World Bank, emphasising transparency and accountability. While urging stakeholders to act decisively to avoid delays.

The project is 56% complete, with 728.7km of transmission corridors cleared. 5,692 affected persons have been compensated. Security challenges are being addressed.

Representatives from Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo attended the meeting, committed to advancing regional power integration.

The project is expected to have a significant impact on West Africa’s economic growth and development.
