From Joseph Adahnu, Yola
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, has commissioned the newly reconstructed Yola Market, built at a cost of N2.98 billion. The market has been renamed Modibbo Adama Modern Market, Yola (MAMMY).

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Yola, Fintiri said the project ends decades of fire disasters, poor sanitation, and congestion that plagued the old market.
He described the former market as a congested and unhygienic trading centre notorious for frequent fire outbreaks that destroyed shops and goods worth millions of naira. Many traders, he said, suffered devastating financial losses.

Instead of blaming superstition for the recurring fires, Fintiri said his administration chose a practical solution by demolishing and rebuilding the market with modern facilities designed to improve safety and prevent future incidents.
The new market has 936 shops, comprising 816 lock-up shops and 120 open stalls. It also features upgraded infrastructure to improve security, sanitation, and the trading environment.
Fintiri said the traders’ union initially submitted a list of 307 eligible beneficiaries. The government raised the allocation to 350 shops to accommodate possible omissions.
To ensure proper management, he directed the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industries to engage professional facility managers to handle security, sanitation, and routine maintenance.
He said the renaming to Modibbo Adama Modern Market, reflects Yola’s rich heritage and the state’s commitment to preserving its history while investing in modern infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.
Fintiri expressed confidence that the new market will provide a safer and more conducive environment for businesses and boost commercial activities in the state.
