Tinubu to lead World Leaders at Taraba’s Nwonyo Annual Traditional Fishing Festival

Government has finalized arrangements to host prominent international and national leaders at the 2026 edition of the renowned Nwonyo Annual Traditional Fishing Festival.

Barrister Danjuma Adamu, Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee, announced that the festival, scheduled for Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, 2026, will be graced by high-profile guests, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, as the Special Guest of Honour.

Other expected dignitaries include Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada and President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana.

Addressing journalists in Jalingo, the committee stated that Governor Agbu Kefas, has officially approved the two-day event.

“The governor’s decision reflects his administration’s commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Taraba State while showcasing its immense tourism potential to the global community,” the committee said.

Highlights of the Festival include: Day One – Friday, April 17, 2026 (Jukun Youth Day). The event will kick off at 9:00 a.m. with the Jukun Youth Day celebration at the Aku Uka Palace in Wukari. Other Activities will include a colourful Cultural March Past and Procession, as well as various traditional displays to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Jukun people.

Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District, will deliver the keynote address on the theme: “Rooted in Culture, United in Diversity: Jukun Youths for Peace and Progress.”

There will also be a coronation and conferment of royal titles by His Majesty, Dr. Ishaku Adda Ali Matakhitswen, the Aku Uka of Wukari. Day Two – Saturday, April 18, 2026 (Main Festival).

The grand finale, the Nwonyo Annual Traditional Fishing Festival, will take place at Nwonyo Lake in Ibi, under the leadership of General Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd).

The Taraba State Government described the festival as a deliberate effort to revive and project the state’s cultural assets while positioning Taraba as a premier tourism destination in Nigeria and beyond.

The event is expected to attract thousands of participants, tourists, and investors worldwide.
