From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin
Authorities at the Ilorin Custodial Centre, have thwarted an attempt to smuggle suspected hard drugs into the facility, reinforcing ongoing efforts to maintain strict security within correctional centres.

The incident, which occurred recently involved a visitor who allegedly tried to beat established screening procedures with the suspected backing of an insider. However, alert personnel on duty detected the move and promptly intercepted the individual before the substances could be delivered.
According to a statement from the management of the facility, the suspect has since been arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
“The suspect allegedly attempted to bypass standard search protocols through unauthorized staff facilitation, but our vigilant officers were able to stop the act,” the statement said.
The management added that the development has prompted a review of internal processes, with additional measures already put in place to strengthen security checks across all entry points into the custodial centre.
It stressed that the incident highlights the need for strict compliance with operational guidelines and warned that any compromise by staff or visitors would not be tolerated.
“All personnel are reminded to remain vigilant and uphold the highest standards of professionalism at all times,” the statement added.
The authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining discipline and preventing illegal activities within the facility, while assuring the public that offenders will be brought to justice.
