INEC praises European Union over electoral umpire support in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has applauded the European Union (EU), over their support for electoral body in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stated this while hosting the EU Ambassador, Samuela Isopi, who paid him a farewell visit at INEC office, Abuja.

He said the EU has done a lot in supporting Nigeria’s electoral Umpire in achieving some setting things that makes INEC viable today.

Professor Yakubu gave an insight on how Nigeria election is so complex compare to other smaller countries in west Africa and Africa in general.

According to him, “your Excellency, I want to say that I am going to miss you as I have walk closely with you and I enjoyed the relationship with you.

“I, on behalf of the Commission, want to thank you and the European Union for the support and partnership. It is really a commendable one.

“I must say this that the European Union’s support did not end in INEC but also extended to Nigeria National Assembly and the Judiciary.

“We equally want to extend our appreciation to the European Union and its Members States for all they have been doing to ensure credible, free and fair election is achievable in Nigeria.

On her part, the outgoing European Ambassador, Samuela Isopi, said she enjoyed Nigerian people especially in partnering with them.

According to her, the partnership has been robust in all her stay in Nigeria while she urged them to continue even, with the incoming Ambassador after her.

“Nigeria is the largest democracy in the continent and it is good for it to set a good example for other smaller countries in Africa.

Isopi commended INEC for its improvement, especially in inventing technology into the electoral processes.

She Promised that the EU will continue to support them as far as their partnership continues with the Union.

She specifically commended INEC Chairman and his team for the job they are doing in making sure democracy is sustainable in Nigeria.
