Nigeria’s first lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has disbursed ₦50M under the Elderly Support Scheme, to 250 elderly citizens across the 21 local government as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in Kogi State.

The event which was held in Lokoja, with the theme, “Finding joy in old age”, is the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), disbursing a total of ₦1.9 billion to support senior citizens across the 36 states and FCT.

Sen. Tinubu, who was represented by the Wife of the State Governor and the RHI Coordinator in the state, Hajia Sefinat Ododo, highlighted that the initiative since inception in 2023, has consistently celebrated senior citizens every December in recognition of their invaluable contributions to nation-building.

According to her, under the 2025 programme, a total of 9,500 vulnerable senior citizens aged 65 years and above, as well as beneficiaries from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), will receive ₦200,000 naira each.

The first lady said that this gesture reflects her commitment to improving the living conditions of vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly in the country.

She encouraged the senior citizens to remain active, find purpose in community life, and embrace compassion and care as pathways to joyful ageing.

She commended them for their sacrifices and prayed that God would grant them long life to enjoy the renewed hope promised them.

Earlier in her remark the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Margaret Oyibo, praised the First Lady’s compassionate efforts, in caring for those who have contributed to nation building.

Mrs. Oyibo urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the financial support provided, while encouraging them to invest the money in maintaining a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.
