From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has issued an order requiring private transmission substation owners to register and obtain an Independent Electricity Transmission Network Operator (IETNO)’s permit.

This is to strengthen oversight and improve grid reliability, safety, operational visibility and solve frequent transmission line trips off reports.

In a statement by NERC on its X handle, said the decision is to ameliorate the problem of frequent transmission line grid disturbances in the sector.

By this order, the existing private transmission substation owners have 45 days to apply for the permit, while new owners must obtain it before connecting to the grid. Non-compliance may attract regulatory sanctions.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), will deploy IoT-based metering systems at substation interconnection points within 120 days and conduct inspections to ensure compliance.

The order follows frequent transmission line trips reported by NISO, highlighting concerns about grid stability and safety.

NERC’s directive was aimed at enhancing regulatory oversight and ensure adherence to the Grid Code in Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.
