From Taiye Joseph, Ekiti

An Ado Ekiti Magistrate Court has sentenced a 26-year-old man, Isah Mohammad, to two years imprisonment for stealing iron rods meant for building construction.

Mohammad was first arraigned before Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola, on August 19, 2024, on a one-count charge of stealing.

According to the charge sheet, the offence was committed on July 30, 2024, when the convict stole iron rods valued at N200,000 belonging to one Adejibola Ademola. The materials were kept for the completion of a residential building along New Iyin Road in Ado Ekiti.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Adesegun, said the act contravened Section 302 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

He presented four witnesses, including the site supervisor, and also tendered the defendant’s confessional statement and the recovered iron rods as exhibits.

One of the witnesses, site supervisor Ezekiel Akinola, told the court that the materials were stored for continued construction after reaching the lintel stage, but were discovered missing on August 8, 2024. He also accused the convict and his group of causing trouble in the community.

Mohammad, who was represented by his lawyer, Lanre Oluwasola Esq., failed to present any witness in his defence.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Daramola, held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Mohammad to two years in prison.
