From David Onuoja, Abuja
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan SAN, has described the visit of Plateau State SANs to INEC’s headquarters as apt, even as he reaffirmed the Commission’s focus on preparations for the 2027 general elections, and the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Amupitan made this remarks while responding to the delegation of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), resident in Plateau State, led by Pius Akubo, who visited the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja to congratulate him on his appointment as INEC Chairman on Wednesday.
He appealed to Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to continue to support and pray for the Commission as it carries out its constitutional mandate ahead of the forthcoming polls.
Professor Amupitan also commended the National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides for their unwavering support, describing them as the “generals” behind the success of recent elections.
Presenting a congratulatory card on behalf of the Plateau SANs, Akubo who is the leader of the delegation described Professor Amupitan’s appointment as a historic milestone for the North-Central region and for Nigeria’s democracy, and prayed for divine guidance and protection over him as he leads the Commission.
Responding to this, Amupitan expressed appreciation for the visit, describing the Plateau SANs as family and recalling his professional roots within the legal community in the state.
He used the avenue to pay tribute to one of the Senior Advocates from Plateau State who passed on recently, describing the loss as a painful one for the legal profession.
