Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has officially received the National Unity Torch in anticipation of the 22nd National Sports Festival, scheduled to hold from May 16 to May 30, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, Governor Ododo underscored the crucial role of sports in fostering national unity and driving socio-economic development.
He emphasised the power of sports in bridging divides and uniting diverse groups, reaffirming Kogi State’s commitment to leveraging the festival as an avenue for collaboration, cultural exchange, and showcasing the athletic excellence of its contingents.
Governor Ododo assured that Team Kogi was well-prepared to participate in the festival, with the state government fully committed to providing the necessary support to ensure a commendable performance.
He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to make the state proud through dedication and determination.
Leading the delegation, Ikana Mbora, a member of the National Sports Commission, explained that the National Unity Torch symbolises unity and inclusiveness, making its way across all 36 states of the federation.
She noted that Kogi State marks the fourth stop on the nationwide tour since the official flag-off by the President.
Mbora also reiterated that the torch serves as a call to all states to actively participate in the festival, with adequate preparations in place to ensure a successful and memorable event.
In his remarks, Mr. Haruna Jibo, the Permanent Secretary of the Kogi State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, affirmed that strategic preparations are ongoing to enhance Team Kogi’s performance.
He expressed optimism that the team would deliver an outstanding representation at the festival.
The 22nd National Sports Festival promises to be a grand showcase of sporting excellence, unity, and talent, as Abeokuta prepares to host athletes and sports enthusiasts from across the country.
