Gov Ododo mourns passing of media icon, Professor Tom Adaba

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has paid tribute to the late Professor Tom Adaba, the pioneering Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), who passed away on Saturday at the age of 84.

Governor Ododo’s condolence message was conveyed through his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, and shared with Reporters in Lokoja on Sunday.

The Governor described the late Professor Tom Adaba as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s development and a fearless advocate for the people of Ebira land and Kogi state.

He acknowledged Professor Adaba’s profound impact as a distinguished broadcaster, communications scholar, and media administrator.

According to Governor Ododo, “I am saddened by the death of our father and Leader, Profeasor Tom Adaba, who has gone to be with his maker. Our prayers are with his immediate family, the people of Kogi State and Nigeria at large for the collosal loss of the man who is widely regarded as a teacher, mentor and leader by many in the media profession, the academia, Ebira community and Nigeria,” he stated.

The Governor extended his condolences to the Ohinoyi of Ebira land, Alhaji Ahmed Tijani Muhammed Anaje, as well as the entire Ebira people and Kogites, following the passing of Professor Tom Adaba, who held the esteemed traditional title of Ohieteohueyi of Ebira land.

Professor Adaba left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s broadcast industry, serving as the first principal of the NTA Television College in Jos and contributing significantly to journalism practice and media development.

The late Professor Tom Adaba, born in 1941, was a trailblazer with numerous groundbreaking achievements. His impressive record includes being the first Nigerian elected as President of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE).

He also made history as the pioneering principal of the Nigerian Television College and later as the inaugural Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, serving until his retirement from public service in the late 1990s.
