From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding investment in the livestock sector to improve the livelihoods of farmers and the overall economy.

Governor AbdulRazaq made this known during the opening ceremony of the third batch of training for 100 extension agents and farmers on small ruminant production and crop residue processing.

The event, organized by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), at the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) in Idofian, also saw the distribution of crop residue crushers and pelleting machines to farmers.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, the governor, highlighted the challenges facing the livestock sector, such as climate change, disease outbreaks, and limited access to resources.

He noted that the training would help farmers overcome these hurdles and equip them with the skills needed to manage their livestock more effectively.

“Our livestock sector must evolve to meet the demands of our growing population while being mindful of environmental sustainability. By implementing best practices in animal husbandry, we can ensure healthier livestock, improved yields, and reduced environmental impact,” Governor AbdulRazaq stated.

He emphasised that the government’s comprehensive initiative, through the L-PRES project, is designed to enhance livestock capacity through training and sustainable practices, ultimately empowering farmers to thrive in an ever-changing agricultural landscape.

The governor also flagged off the distribution of crop residue processing equipment, marking another step towards boosting the livestock sector in Kwara.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Alhaji AbdulRasaq Jiddah, urged the trainees to make the most of the opportunities provided, noting that their success would contribute significantly to the state’s economic growth.

In his presentation, lead facilitator Dr. Akeem Ajeigbe commended the governor for his unwavering support and encouraged the participants to apply the knowledge gained during the training to address the challenges in the livestock sector.

State Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye, expressed gratitude to the state government, the World Bank, and the National L-PRES Office for their support. He stated that with the skills acquired, participants are now well-positioned to become job creators.

Speaking on behalf of the trainees, Mrs. Abdulkareem Shukurat and Mr. Akani Tajudeen, thanked Governor AbdulRazaq for the opportunity to become self-reliant and contribute to the state’s agricultural development.
