From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), has officially commenced the construction of a new National Control Room at the National Control Centre (NCC), in Osogbo, Osun State.

The project was kicked off following the formal handover of the site to Messrs FBS Construction Engineering Services Limited on Monday, April 21, 2026.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, NISO Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, urged the contractors to uphold the highest standards throughout the project.

He emphasised collaboration, professionalism, and strict compliance with safety and quality requirements as non-negotiable. Mohammed also tasked NCC management with ensuring proper supervision and coordination, expressing confidence that the project would be delivered on schedule.

The Executive Director of System Operations, Engr. Nafisatu Ali, underscored the strategic importance of the facility, describing the National Control Centre as a critical national asset central to both security and economic development.

She reiterated NISO’s commitment to building infrastructure that strengthens grid stability and reliability nationwide. For her, the site handover goes beyond procedure — it signals a renewed commitment to execute the project with clarity, purpose, and efficiency.

Ali expressed strong confidence in the capacity of both FBS Construction and NISO’s internal teams to deliver successfully. The new control room is expected to modernize Nigeria’s power system operations, giving grid operators enhanced tools to monitor and manage the national grid in real time.

Also addressing the gathering, Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, Mr. Babajide Ibironke, called on the contractor to approach the work with a deep sense of national responsibility. Noted that the initiative is pivotal to improving electricity stability across the country, with direct benefits for homes, businesses, and industry.

The construction marks a major step in NISO’s push to upgrade Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure. Once completed, the new National Control Room is set to play a key role in reducing system collapses, improving response times to grid disturbances, and supporting the broader goal of a more stable and reliable power supply for Nigerians.
