From David Onuoja, Abuja
The Federal Government has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano State, adding 544 megawatts of wheeling capacity to the state and the national grid.
The substations, executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the Kano State Government, under the Federal Ministry of Power, are located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi. Walalambe contributes a new 80MW capacity with two 40MVA transformers, Kumbotso receives 300MVA at 330kV level and 100MVA transformers, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi each gained an additional 100MVA transformer at 132kV level.
According to the Ministry, the projects will strengthen bulk electricity supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas in Kano, relieve overloaded substations and meet previously suppressed demand. At Walalambe, six outgoing feeders will supply the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities.
A major industrial enterprise, Lee Group, has been reconnected to the grid after over 30 years of operating off-grid, while the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation has regained substantial capacity to serve the ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.
The projects, the Ministry said, are a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his determination to reset the power sector as a foundation for national development and turn infrastructure investment into economic opportunity across the country.
