*Targets kidnap gangs along key routes

From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Nigerian military has launched a sustained offensive against bandit camps in Ifelodun, Edu, and Patigi Local Government Areas of Kwara State, destroying multiple hideouts and neutralising several suspected criminals.

The operation, combining airstrikes and ground troop maneuvers, aims to dismantle the network of kidnappers and terror gangs operating along the Kwara–Niger corridor.

Military sources said raids hit notorious camps at Baba Sango in Ifelodun, Gbugbu forest in Edu, and Lata community in Patigi. Preliminary reports indicate that the attacks caused heavy casualties among the criminals, forcing many to abandon their positions. “The operations have disrupted the gangs’ command structures and logistics. We have destroyed several camps and continue to pressure fleeing elements across surrounding forests,” a military spokesperson said.

Security officials, however, warned that the efforts are being hampered by local informants who leak information on troop movements. “We urge residents to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies. Protecting criminals only prolongs insecurity and endangers innocent lives,” the spokesperson added.

Community leaders in the affected areas have also been called upon to educate residents on the risks of shielding bandits, emphasising that collaboration with authorities is key to restoring peace.

Military operations are ongoing, with troops working to clear forests and border communities of all remaining threats. Authorities assured residents that the military is committed to stabilising the region and appealed for credible intelligence from the public to ensure the success of the offensive.
