From Joseph Adahnu, Yola

The Lunguda Traditional Council of Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has announced the change of its name from Lunguda Traditional Council to Nungurau Traditional Council.

After the year 2025 festival, the council has renamed Lunguda to Nungurau at the annual Sinmilalama cultural festival held at Dishon Dansanda square in Guyuk.

Kwandi Nunguraya, HRM Dr Kuruhaye Dishon Dansanda II, officially unveiled the brand new name to in tune with Lunguda extraction.

The renewal has formalised through a sworn affidavit filed at the Adamawa State High Court, affirming the shift from “Lunguda” to “Nungura.”

Kwandi said the affidavit supporting the new name notes that “Lunguda,” a colonial imposition, is now being replaced by “Nʋngʋrau,” aligning with dialect clusters such as Gwaanda, Cerii, and Deele.

He said, the new name is perceived as reflecting the preferred identity of a people numbering millions.

The name “Nungurau” is derived from “Nungiraba,” meaning “people who are very close to one another.”

With this development, all official transactions involving the name including the nomenclature of Lunguda will be referred to a Nungurau.”
