From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has dismissed a viral social media publication falsely linking its Commandant, Dr. Umar Mohammed, to comments allegedly made by a retired Army General.

The report, which circulated online, claimed that a “Major General Umar Mohammed” who served in the Nigerian Army for 35 years had granted an interview to Trust TV criticising military operations. The NSCDC clarified that the story was entirely false and misleading.

In a statement issued in Ilorin by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC 1 Ayoola Shola, the agency stated that Dr. Mohammed “is not a retired Major General and has never served in the Nigerian Army.”

“The Commandant has at no time granted any interview to Trust TV or any other media organization on the matter referenced,” Shola said, describing the report as “a clear case of mistaken identity or deliberate misinformation aimed at misleading the public and tarnishing the image of a respected officer.”

The statement also condemned the use of Dr. Mohammed’s photograph in the fake report, warning that such acts could misinform the public and damage reputations.

“The Command urges online publishers, bloggers, and social media users to always verify information before publication,” it added. “Spreading unverified stories undermines the credibility of responsible journalism.”

The Corps further advised members of the public to disregard the false report and rely only on verified communication channels of the NSCDC for accurate information.

Reaffirming its commitment to national service, the Command assured that it remains focused on protecting critical infrastructure, maintaining public safety, and upholding professionalism and integrity in all its operations.
