From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), Department of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the Nigerian Fire Service, staged a fire drill at TCN’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

The exercise was designed to evaluate how staff, ministry personnel, and visitors respond to emergency evacuation procedures during fire incidents.

This drill commenced with the activation of the headquarters’ fire alarm system. Staff of TCN, personnel from the Federal Ministry of Power, and visitors immediately evacuated the building, moving to the designated muster point. The coordinated simulation tested real-time response, evacuation routes, and assembly protocols under controlled emergency conditions.

Speaking after the exercise, General Manager, HSE, Engrineer Ahmed Ibrahim, described the drill as successful. He commended the swift response of staff, visitors, management, and fire service personnel, adding that the exercise marked a significant step toward strengthening emergency preparedness at the Headquarters.

TCN’s Principal Manager (Fire Safety), Mr Monday Johnson, also praised the orderly evacuation and advocated for regular drills to maintain staff awareness and readiness.

A representative of the Nigerian Fire Service, Kolade John, reiterated that the exercise was a simulation but stressed the importance of familiarity with evacuation procedures in public buildings. He cautioned that, fire incidents can occur without warning and underscored the need for constant preparedness among occupants of office complexes.

TCN said the exercise reflects its broader commitment to workplace safety and emergency response capacity. By collaborating with the Nigerian Fire Service, the company aims to enhance staff skills and ensure a safe working environment across its facilities.
