Sickle cell is a genetic disease that affects the blood, causing severe health challenges for those living with it. To offer support and raise awareness, Prof. Usman Ogbo, the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, has launched the Shamsudeen Usman Sickle Cell Foundation.
The foundation was unveiled during Prof. Ogbo’s 52nd birthday celebration which was held in Lokoja, marking his commitment to helping individuals with sickle cell anaemia live better lives.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf, restated government’s commitment to partner with the Foundation towards addressing the plight of children with the challenge of Sickle Cell.
In an emotional remark, Prof Ogbo reflected on the inspiration behind the foundation’s creation. He shared how one of his children was diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia, a challenge that deeply impacted his family.
Caring for his child and witnessing the struggles first hand moved him to extend support to others facing similar hardships. This experience fueled his passion to empathise with and assist those living with the condition.
He expressed appreciation to God and to all who have been there for the family including medical personnel over the years which eventually gave a brighter hope and future for Shamsudeen Usman and eventually birthing the ” Shamsudeen Usman Sickle Cell Foundation” to cater with children with such conditions.
In his speech, Shamsudeen Usman reflected on the pain and challenges he endured, expressing gratitude to God, his parents, and the medical personnel who supported him during those difficult times.
He shared his aspiration of becoming a neurosurgeon in the future, driven by a desire to help others facing similar struggles.
Highlights of the ceremony was a Lecture delivered by Professor Hassan Saliu, department of political science, University of Ilorin with the title “Towards Promoting a Robust Government-Citizens Relationship in Nigeria”.
The donations to support the foundation, goodwill messages from family, friends and colleagues who extolled the sterling qualities and achievements of Prof Ogbo.
