From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

A sombre mood enveloped the Bolarinwa Compound in Centre Igboro, Ilorin, on Sunday after operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service, recovered the body of a 31-year-old man who reportedly jumped into a domestic well.

The incident occurred at about 4:33 am, when residents were still asleep. According to the Fire Service, the deceased, identified as Abdullateef, had made several attempts since the previous day to end his life but was prevented each time. Unfortunately, he made another attempt while others were asleep, leaving no one to intervene.

Firefighters carried out the recovery operation and handed the body to the head of the family, Alhaji Bolarinwa.

Describing the incident as heartbreaking, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, called on families and neighbours to take mental health concerns seriously.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. It is a reminder that we must pay close attention to people around us who show signs of distress,” he said. “Early intervention and close monitoring can save lives.”

The Fire Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and urged the public to be more vigilant in identifying individuals who may require urgent emotional or psychological support.
