From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

A former Grand Khadi of the Kwara State Shariah Court of Appeal, Justice Idris Haroon, has called on the federal government to launch a thorough investigation into the alleged mismanagement of funds by officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) during the 2024 Hajj operations.

Speaking during a live radio interview in Ilorin, Justice Haroon, expressed his concern over reports of financial misconduct within NAHCON, urging that any official found guilty should be held accountable. He emphasised the seriousness of the issue, especially as it affects the well-being of Nigerian pilgrims.

Justice Haroon, revealed that during the recent Hajj, where he was a guest of King Salman of Saudi Arabia, several pilgrims confided in him that they received only $200 as travel allowance instead of the promised $500. He described the situation as a betrayal of trust and called for swift action to address the matter.

“This issue must be thoroughly investigated, and anyone involved in this act of dishonesty that caused hardship to our pilgrims should face the consequences,” he stated.

The former Grand Khadi, also urged the newly appointed NAHCON Chairman, Prof. Abdullahi Sale Uthman, to prioritise restoring integrity to the commission. He reminded Uthman that his role is to serve the entire Muslim community with dedication and transparency, rather than pursuing personal gain.

Justice Haroon’s call for accountability, comes as NAHCON continues to face scrutiny over the handling of funds during the 2024 Hajj, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the affected pilgrims.
