The wife of Kogi State Governor, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, has joined the global call to end female genital mutilation (FGM), describing it as a grave violation of human rights that endangers the lives of millions of girls and women.
In a statement marking the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM observed annually, every 6th of february, Mrs. Ododo highlighted the urgent need for stronger collaboration to protect vulnerable girls from the harmful practice
She emphasised that the collective efforts of stakeholders will put an end to FGM, making those that indulge in such practice to desist from it.
“FGM continues to threaten the health and future of millions of women and girls globally and according to UNICEF, over 200 million survivors are living with the consequences, while more than 25 million others remain at risk in the coming years.

This is deeply concerning, especially in Africa, where efforts to eradicate the practice must be intensified,” she said.
She urged the government, civil society, and community leaders to take decisive action to end FGM in the state.
Hajia Sefinat Ododo stressed that no cultural or traditional justification should override the fundamental rights of girls to safety and dignity.
Mrs. Ododo also reaffirmed her commitment to working with relevant organisations to support survivors and strengthen advocacy efforts aimed at eliminating the practice.
“My office will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to raise awareness, provide assistance to affected individuals, and ensure that policies against FGM are fully implemented,” she assured.
The first lady reassured citizens that her office would continue to partner with relevant organisations to strengthen efforts in eliminating FGM as well as provide necessary support for affected individuals.
