From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has directed the immediate implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage for state workers, in line with the Federal Government’s policy.

The approval was confirmed by the Honourable Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, in a statement released over the weekend.

“The implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage begins this October,” Dr. Nuru said. “This move underscores Governor AbdulRazaq’s commitment to the welfare of workers across Kwara State, ensuring that their well-being remains a top priority.”

The decision follows a successful tripartite meeting between the Kwara State Government, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), and representatives from the organised private sector.

The agreement also includes necessary adjustments to the relevant salary structures, ensuring fair compensation for all public servants in the state.

Dr. Nuru, who co-chaired the minimum wage committee, commended Governor AbdulRazaq, for granting the committee full autonomy in reaching an agreement that benefits both the government and its workforce. “Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration is deeply committed to the sustainable development and economic stability of Kwara State,” she noted.

The new wage policy, which covers public servants across all 16 local government areas of the state, reflects the governor’s forward-thinking leadership and the state’s dedication to fostering growth and prosperity. Dr. Nuru added that the policy would help cushion the impact of the current economic realities, ensuring that workers’ welfare remains a priority.

She praised the cooperative efforts between the government and labour unions, stating, “This achievement would not have been possible without the collaborative spirit exhibited by all parties involved.” The Finance Commissioner further reiterated the administration’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of all citizens in Kwara, aligning with the governor’s broader vision for the state.

“The new minimum wage is a testament to our unwavering commitment to improving the lives of our workers and ensuring their contributions are adequately rewarded,” she concluded.
