From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin
Labour unions in Nigeria have been urged to be proactive in advancing the welfare of their members and contributing to national progress.
The Senior Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Mumuni Onagun, made this call while delivering a paper at the inauguration of newly elected branch executives of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Kwara State Council, in Ilorin.
He emphasised the critical role of union leaders in fostering unity and supporting the government in delivering good governance.
Comrade Onagun assured that the Kwara State Government remains committed to prioritizing workers’ welfare and encouraged labour leaders to collaborate with the administration to achieve mutual goals.
Speaking at the event, the Kwara State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who also serves as the National Vice President, North Central Zone of MHWUN, Comrade Muritala Olayinka, reaffirmed the commitment of the labour movement to defend the rights of its members.
In his address, the Kwara State Chairman of MHWUN, Comrade Bolatito Oladele, reiterated his administration’s dedication to accountability, transparency, and discipline.
He charged the newly elected branch chairmen to uphold these values to ensure the union’s continued progress.
“I therefore call on the new Branch Chairmen to make these three pillars the foundation of their leadership to avoid pitfalls that could ruin their careers. The State Council will not hesitate to act against any branch leader who violates the union’s constitution and financial policies,” Bolatito warned.
He commended the smooth conduct of elections across the union’s 19 branches in Kwara State and urged the newly elected executives to align with the strategic vision of the union in advancing the welfare of members.
“This occasion is historic as it is the first time elected branch chairmen and secretaries are officially mandated under the State Council to uphold the union’s ideals and values across various branches,” he stated.
Bolatito further emphasised the need for modern trade unionism, urging leaders to stay informed about relevant policies, circulars, and public service rules to effectively advocate for members.
“As you are aware, my predecessors sacrificed a lot to bring this union to its current height, and it is our responsibility to protect and sustain its reputation. The State Council will not tolerate any executive that undermines the progress of the union,” he cautioned.
In a significant appeal, Comrade Bolatito Isaac called on the Kwara State Government to adopt the newly approved 65 years retirement age and 40 years of service for workers, in line with the federal government’s directive.
Also speaking, Comrade Prince Sunday Oyewole, Head of Department, Health Education, Local Government Authority, advised the newly elected executives to lead by example and uphold the union’s principles.
The event also featured recognition of veteran union leaders for their contributions to the growth of MHWUN in Kwara State.
