Residents of Kemanji village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State,  have been thrown into mourning following a deadly midnight attack by suspected bandits, with several villagers and soldiers feared killed.

The attack, which reportedly occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, saw heavily armed assailants invade the quiet community, unleashing terror on unsuspecting residents.

Security sources said troops of the Nigerian Army, working alongside local vigilantes, quickly mobilised to repel the attackers, leading to a fierce gun battle that lasted for about two hours.

A source disclosed that the exchange of gunfire, which raged between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., resulted in casualties on both sides, including military personnel. However, the exact number of those killed is yet to be confirmed as assessments are ongoing.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that several villagers lost their lives during the attack while properties were destroyed amid the chaos.

The latest incident adds to the growing wave of insecurity in Kaiama LGA. Only days earlier, bandits reportedly attacked Woro and Nuku communities, killing residents, burning homes, and abducting over 100 people who are still in captivity.

In a related development, suspected bandits also struck in Ora Ayegbaju, Obbo-Ile area of Ekiti Local Government Area on Sunday night, further heightening fears among residents.

During the attack, which occurred around 10:00 p.m., three brothers—AbdulJareem Adamu, AbdulJareem Yunusa, and AbdulJareem Yusuf—were seriously injured after being shot by the gunmen, while many others fled for safety.

A local source said the attackers stormed the community unexpectedly and opened fire, causing panic as residents ran in different directions.

The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Osi town.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to release official statements on the incidents, leaving residents anxious and calling for urgent government intervention to address the worsening security situation in the area.
