Residents of the Aku community in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, recently convened a peace meeting aimed at addressing tensions between members of the Ebira and Fulani communities, particularly over concerns relating to the destruction of farm crops.
The dialogue was initiated by human rights advocate, Comrade Mamman Aminu, who underscored the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding among all residents.
He emphasised that the Aku community belongs to everyone who lives there and called for collaborative efforts to maintain harmony, noting that sustainable peace is in the collective interest of both communities.
Participants at the meeting acknowledged that disputes over farmland and grazing activities have contributed to recent misunderstandings.

Community stakeholders expressed the need for practical measures to prevent further incidents and strengthen communication between farmers and herders.
Abdulaziz Nayibi, a stakeholder in the community, stated that the purpose of the meeting was to create an opportunity for both groups to discuss their concerns openly and work toward agreements that would reduce crop damage and promote accountability.
HRH Muhammed Usman, the Ohinoyi (leader) of Fulani community in Adavi Local Government Area, commended the initiative and reaffirmed his commitment to peacebuilding efforts.
He indicated that representatives have been appointed within the community structure to facilitate dialogue and ensure concerns are communicated appropriately.
Similarly, leaders within the Fulani community in Osara assured residents that they would sensitise their members on the need to prevent cattle from straying into farmlands. They pledged cooperation with local authorities and community leaders to minimise further disputes.
On their part, traditional and community leaders in Aku reiterated that crop destruction has been a recurring concern for farmers. The ward head of Aku community, Ibrahim Onimisi, stated that security authorities have been informed of past incidents and expressed hope that the renewed dialogue would yield more sustainable outcomes.
The Chairman of the Farm Centre community, Musa Muhammed, appealed to Adavi Local Government Council to provide long-term solutions that would safeguard livelihoods and strengthen peaceful relations among residents.
Responding, the Chairman of Adavi Local Government Area, Hon. Bashiru Okategwu, welcomed the peaceful engagement and reiterated the government’s responsibility to protect lives and property. He assured both communities that appropriate measures would be taken to prevent further incidents and maintain order.
As part of the resolution process, a joint delegation comprising representatives from both the Ebira and Fulani communities is scheduled to meet with local government officials today, 20th February 2026, at the Adavi Secretariat to formalise agreements aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence.
Security officials present at the meeting commended the large turnout and described the gathering as a positive step toward addressing longstanding concerns through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Community members expressed optimism that sustained engagement, improved communication channels, and collaboration with authorities would help restore confidence and strengthen unity within the Aku community.
