Adamawa state Government, has flagged off distribution of 4000 relief materials to house holds affected by the recent devastating flood that claimed no fewer than 29 lives and hundreds displaced.
The relief intervention, donated by the Adamawa State Government, Nigeria’s First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the North East Development Commission (NEDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and Senator Aminu Iya Abbas representing Adamawa Central, is being distributed simultaneously at four centres: Digital Centre, Ahmadu Ribadu College, Lamido Zubairu College, and Aliyu Mustapha College in Yola South Local Government Area.
Flagging off the distribution, Adamawa state Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapha Farauta, cautioned beneficiaries against selling the assorted items, warning that the government will deploy monitoring teams to ensure that no relief materials are diverted or found in shops.
“These items are meant for family use, to cushion the devastating effects of the flood,” she said. “Government will not take it lightly with anyone caught selling these relief materials.”
She also encouraged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the rainy season to plant crops and support their livelihoods. The Deputy Governor reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the people.
Earlier, through the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), the government had intensified its response to flood victims by distributing relief collection tickets door-to-door in affected communities such as Shagari, Yolde Pate, Modire, and surrounding areas. The tickets were issued to verified victims, enabling them to access food, bedding, clothing, and other essential items.
According to official figures, about 29 people lost their lives as a result of the flooding.
Items distributed include bags of rice, maize, cartons of spaghetti, cartons of seasoning cubes, cartons of tomato paste, kegs of vegetable oil, and bags of iodized salt. Non-food items include plastic cups, spoons, children’s clothing, nylon mats, blankets, and mattresses, among others.
