From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin
It was an evening of emotions and glowing tributes in Ilorin recently as political leaders, royal fathers, and family members gathered to honour the late former Governor of Kwara State, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, during a wake-keep ceremony in his memory.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Deputy, Elder Kayode Alabi, described the late Adebayo as “a great leader, a bridge, and a shepherd” who stood tall in the nation’s political history.
“Chief Cornelius Adebayo was a remarkable statesman who served Nigeria with moral courage and humility,” the Governor said. “Whether as a former governor, NADECO chieftain, federal minister, or Afenifere leader, he consistently upheld the values of democracy, justice, and good governance. History will never forget his contributions.”
AbdulRazaq added that Adebayo’s life exemplified service to God and humanity, urging Nigerians to emulate his virtues. “As we mourn his departure, we are reminded that life is a fleeting journey, and what truly matters is the legacy we leave behind,” he said.
Family members and friends also spoke fondly of the late elder statesman. One of his daughters, Bimbo Adewoye, described her father as a man with a large heart who was deeply devoted to God and his family. “My father believed that wherever he found himself was God’s design. He promoted unity among his children and always placed family first,” she said.
The ceremony drew a host of dignitaries, including the Kwara First Lady, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq; former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Senator Umar Sadiq (Kwara North); House of Representatives member, Raheem Tunji Ajuloopin; and the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Abiodun Adebara.
Others in attendance were NACCIMA President, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim; APC State Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi; Chairman, NHIA Board, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe; Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi; and prominent traditional rulers including the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III.
Chief Cornelius Adebayo, who served as Kwara State Governor and Minister of Communications, was widely respected for his integrity, intellect, and principled leadership that shaped many moments of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
