From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on workers, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved a special financial bonus for civil servants, including local government employees across the state.

The bonus, which is equivalent to the monthly Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax obligation, is designed to provide a cushion for workers adapting to the correct PAYE deductions on the recently implemented minimum wage.

According to a statement issued by Dr. Hauwa Nuru, the state’s Commissioner for Finance, the emergency support measure will run from October through December 2024.

“This bonus has been approved as a buffer to bridge the gap that the correct PAYE deduction may have wrought on the newly implemented minimum wage. It is meant to serve as a soothing balm as workers adjust to the PAYE that was just correctly implemented in line with the Personal Income Tax Act,” Dr. Nuru explained.

She added that the initiative reflects Governor AbdulRazaq’s dedication to the welfare of the state’s workforce.

“Governor AbdulRazaq’s directive to deliver this relief speaks volumes about his humanity and his commitment to the welfare of Kwara workforce,” Dr. Nuru noted.

The statement also advised workers to ensure their registration with the Kwara State Residents’ Registration Agency (KWSRRA), as only those registered will receive the bonus for November and December.

Furthermore, labour unions have agreed to refund the special levy previously deducted from salaries and to suspend further deductions until further notice.

The measure underscores the administration’s proactive approach to supporting workers during challenging economic times.
