From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Bishop of the Kwara Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Revd. Sunday Adewole, has called on  Federal Government to reintegrate retired military and police officers to enhance security in rural areas across Nigeria.

Speaking during a press briefing held in Ilorin, Kwara State, to commemorate the Diocese’s 50th anniversary, Bishop Adewole highlighted the urgent need to deploy experienced personnel to rural communities, where insecurity remains a significant challenge.

“The government should build on the reliefs recorded in curbing the menace of the bandits and other insurgents by recalling retired military and police officers into the security system, especially in rural areas,” he urged.

Bishop Adewole, commended the government for its ongoing efforts against banditry and insurgency but stressed that the involvement of retired officers would strengthen these initiatives, creating a more secure environment in underserved areas.

He also expressed concerns over the recent fuel subsidy removal, stating that its impact has increased economic strain on Nigerians.

“Since the removal of fuel subsidy, I have not seen its positive effect on the people. Any program of the government that does not carry a human face should be dropped,” he stated, calling for policies that prioritize citizens’ welfare.

Addressing food security, the Bishop encouraged Nigerians to embrace agriculture, revealing that the Diocese has secured land and necessary resources to launch an agricultural project aimed at fostering self-sufficiency.

Additionally, Bishop Adewole advised the government to consider reducing the cost of governance by cutting officials’ allowances, rather than maintaining high salaries amid economic challenges.

Reflecting on the Diocese’s accomplishments over the past five decades, he praised its role in education and vocational training through its schools and centers.

The Diocese’s anniversary celebrations will conclude on Sunday, November 3, with a service expected to feature the Primate of the Church, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba.
