Edo Elections: 56 organisations, 894 observers upload details as portal ‘ll shutdown July 31

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged the Civil Society Organization (CSOs), who are part of observers in the upcoming election in Edo State to intensify their advocacy for peaceful elections, including engagement with stakeholders.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu who made the call during a Quarterly Consultative Meeting held with the CSOs at the Commission’s headquarters, Abuja said, 56 organisations, 894 observers has so far uploaded their details even as the portal will shutdown automatically today July 31.

INEC boss said, based on the information provided by the Commission, “we look forward to your partnership in encouraging citizens to collect their PVCs.

“I wish to remind CSOs to submit the list of your observers by uploading the required information, including photographs, to the dedicated portal on or before Wednesday 31July 2024.

“As at Monday, 29th July, 2024, 56 organisations have uploaded the details of 894 observers for the Edo State Governorship election representing 33.6% of the expected 2,660 observers”, he said.

Responding on behalf of the Civil Society Organizations, Director General, Center for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness, Dr. Nwambu Gabriel, commended the INEC Chairman and his team for keeping up in the process of reforming electoral system in Nigeria.

He said for INEC to use the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), to further clean-up double registration is a good one.

“I commend INEC for the update in their preparedness on Edo/Ondo elections despite some challenges bedevilling them”, Dr. Gabriel said.
