From David Onuoja, Abuja

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has on Thursday in Abuja, nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the new Minister of Power.

In a press statement from the State House, Abuja which was signed by the President’s Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, said, the nomination, which awaits Senate screening and confirmation, comes after the former minister, Adebayo Adelabu resigned to pursue his Governorship ambition in Oyo State.

According to the statement, Tinubu’s choice of Tegbe is aimed at driving critical reforms in Nigeria’s Power Sector. The nomination has already been transmitted to the Senate in line with the constitutional requirements.

Tegbe, an indigene of the same Oyo State with Adelabu (former), brings over 35 years of experience across public and private sectors. A fiscal and economic reform expert, he previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa. There, he led major initiatives on fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, and governance for both government and private institutions.

In that role, he coordinates bilateral development cooperation between Nigeria and China, working with public sector stakeholders to advance economic and social development under FOCAC objectives.

The Presidency highlighted Tegbe’s prior work in the power sector, noting his involvement in regulatory and institutional reform with agencies including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, NBET. His background covers strategic reforms, regulatory frameworks, and investment structuring.

According to the State House, Tegbe’s nomination is expected to bolster ongoing efforts to reform the sector, improve grid stability, and attract sustainable investment. President Tinubu also expects the minister-designate, once confirmed, to deploy his expertise to deliver better outcomes for Nigerians in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Senate in weeks to come, is expected to announce a date for Tegbe’s screening in the floor of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
