Christian youths in Kwara State, have been challenged to move from the sidelines of national discourse to active participation in governance and community development.

The call came during a one-day political education programme organized by the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Kwara State Chapter, themed “Arise and Lead 2.0: Stepping into the Arena.”
YOWICAN Kwara Chairman, Evangelist Stephen Awoyale, explained that the initiative aims to link young people with decision-making spaces.

He noted that while many youths express concern about national issues, few take practical steps to influence governance.
“We talk, we analyse, we complain, but we do not engage. We desire change, yet we remain distant from the very systems where decisions are made,” Awoyale said. “Politics should not be seen as dirty or complicated. It is a platform where principled leadership can transform communities. When the right people stay away, the wrong systems take over.”

Venerable Julius Adesina, former Special Assistant on Religion (Christian), in Kwara State, encouraged youths to couple their faith with action. Quoting Proverbs 14:34, he said, “Governance is instituted by God, and as Christians, we must engage the system with the aim of serving and promoting righteousness. When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.”
He urged youths to reject corruption, promote unity across religious and ethnic lines, and participate in civic initiatives such as voter registration and community development projects.

Kwara State Commissioner for Communications, Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, stressed the importance of preparation for leadership, particularly for women and young people. “Women should not just wait. They need to build themselves, build a portfolio, and acquire knowledge. You must understand what is happening within your local government and across the political and social landscape,” she said. She also encouraged mentorship and mutual support as key tools for leadership growth.
Awoyale concluded the programme with a rallying message, urging youths to turn intention into action. “Let it be said that we did not sit back and complain. Let it be said that we stepped forward, engaged, and answered the call. This is our time to arise and lead.”
Apostle Shina Ibiyemi, Secretary of the Kwara State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), emphasised that youth participation in politics is essential for effective leadership and community development. “Even if a small percentage of our youths came out to vote, it would have a huge impact. Political participation is the only way to ensure that our voices are heard and that we benefit from opportunities like political appointments and community projects,” he said.
The programme drew Christian youths, community leaders, and stakeholders committed to nurturing a generation ready to lead with integrity and promote justice across Kwara State.
