The Minority members of the House of Representatives, have staged a dramatic walkout from plenary on Tuesday, protesting the passage of key provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025.
The provisions include, allowing manual transmission of election results alongside real-time electronic transmission (Clause 60(3)) and prescribing modes of candidate nomination by political parties (Clause 84).
Rep. Bamidele Salam, had moved to delete the manual transmission provision, arguing elections should be transmitted electronically without exceptions.
However, the “nays” prevailed, retaining both methods. Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda, led the walkout, citing concerns over potential manipulation of election results.
“We are against any clause that would give room for micro-manipulation, rigging, or leeway for any untoward act,” Chinda stated.
The minority also opposed Clause 84, advocating for political parties to determine their candidate selection methods without external interference.
The House proceeded with amendments despite the protest, highlighting deep partisan divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
