The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged Journalists, especially those covering election in the Country to report with integrity and responsibility, as people believe in  information given out to them.

The National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, gave the advice during a briefing with the Commission’s Press Corps ahead of September 21 Edo Governorship election held, at INEC headquarters, Abuja.

He said, “this briefing therefore becomes necessary knowing the crucial role, you play in shaping our democracy. The media is not just a conveyor of information but also a vital player in the democratic process, particularly during elections.

“Your work influences public perception, informs voter decisions, and upholds the integrity of the electoral process”, he said.

The briefing he added, is important for the members of the INEC Press Corps to have a good knowledge and understanding of what is expected of them during the coverage of Edo and other elections.

Olumekun, reiterated the Commission’s proactive steps to combat fake news, part of which is to be open and transparent in all its dealings; by constantly updating the public through the media after every Commission’s meeting when decisions are taken.

“Our doors are open for any inquiries, and remember that democracy thrives when the electorate are well-informed, the truth is upheld, and all stakeholders from the voters to the media, act with integrity and responsibility”, he stated.

Also speaking during the briefing is the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the Commission (CPS), Mr Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi, who spoke on the update of past and upcoming elections, said accurate information is a vital tool to kills fake news.

He advised the media not to compromise their reporting because the way the media informed the public would determined the way they act by electing their leaders. “You know sovereignty belongs to the people”, CPS said.

Oyekanmi who complained on the public attacks on him and the rest of the INEC staffs, urged Journalists to be acquainted with Nigerian constitution and electoral act.

He equally advised them to facilitate public debates during election for political parties and candidates, fostering peace and stability, Countering misinformation and fake news, promoting accountability and transparency and hold elected leaders accountable to the people.
