The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, has commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, describing them as partners in progress for National Security.

General Oluyede made this known during the 2026 Easter Retreat, organised by the Council which brings together faith, patriotism, and professional responsibility.
The CDS who was represented by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, praised the NUJ, for choosing a theme that resonates with Nigeria’s current security challenges and socio-economic pressures.

He noted that Easter marks the cornerstone of the Christian faith, symbolizing triumph over death, falsehood, and despair. He emphasised that Nigeria’s experience mirrors the journey from Calvary to the empty tomb, where trials are not permanent and renewal is possible with faith and unity.
The military Chief highlighted the Armed Forces’ commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, citing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and maritime threats.

He commended the media, particularly the NUJ, for shaping national consciousness and promoting peacebuilding through accurate and responsible reporting.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede called on Nigerians to embrace reconciliation, compassion, and collective responsibility, maintaining that security is a shared duty.

The Army Defence Chief expressed gratitude to fallen heroes and urged prayers for troops and the nation, reaffirming the Armed Forces’ commitment to ensuring safety and dignity for all Nigerians.
In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, highlighted the importance of ethical journalism in nation-building, accountability and democratic governance.
He said ethical reporting promotes transparency, combats corruption and strengthens institutions, noting that an informed citizenry is critical to national development.

The minister added that responsible journalism fosters unity, prevents misinformation and promotes social cohesion in a diverse society, while also serving as a voice for the vulnerable.
Earlier, the Chairman of NUJ FCT Council Comrade Grace Ike, called on journalists to draw inspiration from the Easter message by renewing their commitment to truth, integrity and professional excellence.
While acknowledging pressures faced by media practitioners, including tight deadlines, risks associated with truth-telling and societal expectations, she urged them to rise above these challenges.

According to her, operating in the Federal Capital Territory places a unique responsibility on journalists.”We are at the center of national discourse. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” she said.
The chairman encouraged journalists to use the retreat as an opportunity to reflect, reconnect and renew their commitment to the ideals of the profession.
She also stressed the need for unity within the union, describing it as a critical factor in advancing journalism and protecting press freedom.

The speech concluded with Easter wishes, hoping the risen Christ’s peace guides Nigeria toward stability and prosperity.
