From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The University of Ilorin has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainability and gender equality by approving the establishment of two new centres: the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy and the Centre for Gender Studies.

This development was a key outcome of the 301st Senate meeting held at the University Auditorium.

The approval followed the recommendations of the Business Committee of the Senate (BCOS), presented by its Chairman, Prof. Olubunmi Omotesho, who also serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

According to a statement by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, the Senate’s decision was unanimous.

Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Senate, highlighted the global significance of the blue economy initiative.

He stated, “The University Administration was the first to meet the initiator of the blue economy globally, Gunter Pauli, even before he met with the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

He added that Pauli assured the University of his support, which UNILORIN aims to leverage for the prosperity of the new centre.

The Blue Economy concept focuses on the sustainable use of oceans and freshwater resources, minimising environmental harm.

The committee’s report, emphasised that Nigerian universities must position themselves as knowledge hubs to drive the emerging Blue and Regenerative Economy.

Additionally, the Centre for Gender Studies aims to address gender inequalities by challenging traditional norms and promoting gender-sensitive education.

According to the committee, the programme will equip students with the tools to advocate for women’s rights, challenge gender-based discrimination, and advance the global agenda for gender equality in line with the Beijing Declaration.

Both centres will be managed by appointed directors and supported by deputy directors, ensuring the effective implementation of their respective mandates.
