As the cost of living crisis continues to weigh heavily on Nigerians, a coalition of Muslim professionals, has called on citizens to embrace resilience, creativity, and strategic adaptation as key tools for navigating the nation’s economic turbulence.
Speaking in Ilorin at the public lecture of The Companion’s Biennial Elective National Conference, National Amir of the association, Engr. Kamil Olalekan, lamented Nigeria’s economic decline. “Our country has moved from being Africa’s largest economy to fourth place, and from 24th to 27th globally. Over 70 percent of Nigerians are now in multidimensional poverty. We are battling high inflation, a weakened naira, fiscal strain, unemployment, insecurity, and corruption,” he said.
Olalekan explained that the conference theme, “Thriving Amidst Adversity: Strategies for Survival in Nigeria’s Challenging Economy,” was designed to explore practical survival strategies. He stressed that despite the grim statistics, Nigeria’s current realities also open the door for reforms and fresh growth opportunities.
“There are untapped prospects in agriculture, technology, and services. Nigerians can rise above these challenges by learning new skills, innovating, diversifying income streams, and managing finances wisely,” he advised. He urged the government to prioritise citizens’ welfare over political ambitions, with strong investments in agriculture, education, security, and healthcare.
The National Amir further called for deliberate patronage of local products to strengthen domestic industries. “We must make it a habit to buy Nigerian, not just for patriotism, but to boost production and create jobs,” he added.
Guest lecturer, Dr. Sulayman Ibrahim, underscored lifestyle changes, skill acquisition, and cautious investments as essential to survival. “Avoid putting money into businesses you don’t understand. Only invest what you can afford to lose. Adjust your lifestyle and pray for Nigeria while placing the nation’s interest first,” he advised.
University of Ilorin Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN, commended the association for hosting the timely conversation, urging participants to turn the discussions into tangible ventures. Similarly, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu, encouraged attendees to apply the lessons learned and think beyond classroom knowledge.
Closing the event, Olalekan prayed for divine ease and success for Nigerians, while calling for unity, faith, and collective action to steer the nation toward economic recovery
