…as FG hails TCN for its commitment
From David Onuoja, Abuja
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has on Monday in Lagos, commissioned a new 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation, a move the company says will deliver more stable electricity to at least 70,000 residents in Alausa and surrounding communities.
Speaking at both events, Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Power, said the projects reflected the administration’s deliberate approach to fixing the sector’s structural bottlenecks: “Identify the bottleneck. Invest in it. Remove the constraint. Unlock the capacity.”
He linked the upgrades to President Bola Tinubu’s determination to “confront the infrastructure constraints that have limited Nigeria’s economic potential,” noting that ageing equipment and stranded capacity would continue to be addressed nationwide.
The Lekki project, executed by Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited, with World Bank support, also includes an additional 1x300MVA, 330/132kV transformer expected to be energised in November 2026.
TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, who also spoke at the event, said the installation marks a major step in the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen the nation’s transmission network under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
This new transformer replaces an existing 1x30MVA unit at the substation. With the upgrade, Alausa’s total capacity has risen by 70MVA, from 135MVA to 205MVA.
Engr. Abdulaziz explained that the increase was designed to meet growing load demand in the area and to improve service delivery through the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
He noted that the project was executed by Messrs Shanghai Electric Ltd under a World Bank-funded initiative that began in January 2021. Despite implementation challenges, he said, TCN remained committed to delivering critical infrastructure on schedule. The transformer was energised to begin wheeling additional bulk power to distribution load centers.
Beyond Lagos, the TCN boss said the upgrade will have national benefits. “Beyond serving the immediate community, this upgrade meaningfully increases the quantum of bulk power that TCN can wheel to distribution load centers nationwide,” he stated.
According to him, the project reinforces grid stability and ensures more bulk power reaches distribution companies for onward delivery to consumers.
Engr. Abdulaziz credited the achievement to the continued support of the Presidency and the Honourable Minister of Power, whose leadership he described as instrumental to steady progress in the power sector.
He said the project aligns directly with the administration’s goal of building a robust transmission network capable of transporting Nigeria’s growing power needs.
In his closing remarks, the TCN MD thanked President Tinubu, the Minister of Power, the World Bank, the Lagos State Government, contractors, engineers and other stakeholders for their collaboration.
“On behalf of TCN, I extend our profound appreciation,” he said, adding that TCN remains resolute in its mandate to sustain and expand the transmission grid for a reliable power future.
