The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre, Ogun State, after failing to meet his bail conditions.
Spokesperson for the correctional facility, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating that the monarch remained in custody as he had yet to perfect his bail.
“Yes, he is in our custody, which means he has been unable to meet the bail conditions granted by the court yesterday. However, as soon as he does, he will be released,” Odukoya said.
The Ogun State Police Command had on Tuesday arraigned the suspended monarch before a magistrate court over a viral video showing him assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.
According to the charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025), Oba Ogunjobi was accused of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecution alleged that on January 21, 2025, at Sojuolu Street, Ifo, the monarch and others at large conspired to assault and publicly humiliate the elderly victim. The court heard that the accused unlawfully slapped Areola on the face and ear, forcing him to kneel in public—offences punishable under the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Oba Ogunjobi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges before Magistrate F. A. Iroko, who granted him bail at N5 million with two sureties residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
With his failure to meet the conditions, the embattled monarch remains in detention, pending further proceedings.
