From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, says it secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sex offender as part of efforts to tackle Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and protect vulnerable residents in the state.

The State Commandant, Abbas Mohammed, disclosed this during a media briefing at the command headquarters in Ilorin, where he also revealed that the command handled more than 100 gender-related cases between January and June 2026.

According to him, the conviction underscores the command’s resolve to ensure justice for survivors of sexual and GBV.

“Our commitment remains unwavering in protecting the rights and dignity of women, children and other vulnerable members of society through effective investigation, strategic collaboration with relevant stakeholders and diligent enforcement of the law,” Abbas said.

Providing a breakdown of the cases handled during the six-month period, the commandant said the Gender Unit recorded 36 domestic violence cases, with 12 currently undergoing mediation.

He added that the command also received 19 child custody disputes, resolving 15 of them, while four cases are still pending.

On child welfare, Abbas said the command investigated 38 cases of child abandonment, with six already resolved, noting that efforts are ongoing to conclude investigations and safeguard the affected children.

He further disclosed that nine abduction cases were reported, with four victims successfully reunited with their families through the intervention of NSCDC personnel.

The commandant also revealed that eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before various courts for prosecution.

He praised officers of the Gender Unit for their professionalism and dedication, urging residents to promptly report incidents of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offences and other forms of GBV.

Abbas assured the public that the command would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the protection of vulnerable persons and ensure perpetrators of such crimes face the full weight of the law.
