From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has said, is gearing up to upgrade the Alaoji-Onitsha 330kV transmission line, a move expected to significantly enhance power supply in the South East region.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by the TCN, revealed that, the project, in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), involves reconstructing and upgrading the existing single-circuit line to a 330kV double-circuit quad-conductor transmission line.

The statement added that the compensation payments for Project Affected Persons (PAPs), were completed between March 31 and April 2, 2026, covering eight Local Government Areas in Abia and Imo states. PAPs have been given a 90-day grace period to vacate the Right of Way (RoW).

According to Mr. Aromeh Adole, Assistant General Manager (Health, Safety, and Environment), for the AfDB Project Implementation Unit, said the new line will deliver four times the capacity of the existing line, transforming bulk power delivery in the South East.

The project is expected to be completed within 18 months and will reduce transmission losses, enhance grid reliability, and improve power supply to the Alaoji and Port Harcourt axes, Abia State, and the entire South East region.

TCN’s Acting Project Manager, Engrineer Edeh Alexander, praised the Federal Government for timely funding release, saying the upgrade is a critical component of TCN’s strategy to expand the national grid and deliver stable electricity to industrial and residential hubs across Nigeria.
