From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Residents of Adekanbi village near Bode-Saadu, were thrown into panic on Thursday, after a team of policemen and local vigilantes engaged armed bandits who had taken over a hilltop in the area.

The swift operation, carried out by the Kwara State Police Command, led to the recovery of an AK49 rifle, 32 rounds of ammunition and the body of one suspected bandit.

The security team acted on intelligence that the criminals had occupied a fortified position on the hill. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the gunmen opened fire immediately the operatives arrived, but the officers responded with what she described as “a superior, coordinated counter-attack that forced the bandits to flee with possible injuries.”

She said the operation reflects the Command’s strengthened response capacity under Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo. “This is another clear indication that strategic policing and timely intelligence are helping us counter violent threats before they escalate,” she explained.

Ejire-Adeyemi also conveyed the assurance of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, that security agencies will maintain pressure on criminal groups across all identified hotspots in Kwara. “Residents can be confident that offensive operations will continue until peace is fully restored in every community,” she added.

The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information that can help security agencies tackle crime in rural and urban areas of the state.
